Golfers.. What should I buy, Sky Caddie or Golf Buddy? Why?
When I was looking to get a GPS device I asked a similar question and in the end settled on the SkyCaddie because folks felt it was the most accurate on the market and had the best course mappings available. As well, there were a few course I wanted that Golf Buddy didn't have, soooo...
I was also able to find a new unit from a reputable seller on eBay for a lot less $ than the Golf Buddy. That didn't hurt in the decision making process either.
I also don't travel to play golf all that much, so I wasn't worried about the subscription cost associated with SkyCaddie, as the unit holds 10 courses...that's enough for me right now. If I need to a add a course or two, I'll pay for them. I paid so much less for it than the Golf Buddy that I'll still be ahead of the game.
As far as the itself SkyCaddie goes, I love mine. I improved my average score by 6 strokes after I got it...knocked 4 strokes off my all-time best. Well...some additional practice helped too, but I'd say that most of the scoring improvement was due to knowing the yardage and selecting the right club.
With all that said, my advice is to:
1. Look at the courses that are available for each to ensure the ones you care about are there (they weren't all available from Golf Buddy for me)...it may simplify your decision making right there one way or the other.
2. Check the costs associated with each....purchase and subscription. If you're like me and don't plan on playing a lot of travel golf, you'll likely be covered easily by the 10 courses the SkyCaddie will store and so the cost of the subscription is nominal. If not...well...factor that in accordingly.
3. At this point, if the Golf Buddy hasn't already been eliminated, wait for someone with more direct experience with the product to chime in...perhaps they love/hate it. We'll have to wait for some owners to speak up.
