Blades vs. Cavity-backs (high-handicapper)?

I just hit my brand new Nike VR TW blades today. I've heard so many people say you have to be a low handicapper to hit these, and there may be some merit to that philosophy. I am around a 20-25 handicap golfer, and I must say I LOVE these irons. There is some much more feel than my Ping i3 cavity back irons I was playing with. Mishits are definitely harsh and much more often , but I think after a full season with these irons, they will actually lower my handicap.

Any other higher handicapper's have success with blade irons? I bought these after reading some info on how despite 'game improvement' clubs (i.e. swing band-aids), the average golf score for amateurs has not changed in over 40 years.

Actually, scores have gone down marginally over the last 40 years. By that, the average handicap has come down 2 strokes. Keep in mind that you also saw longer and tighter courses being built over the last decade that have higher course ratings/slope than the old parkland/muni tracks of a generation ago.

Unless you can actually work the ball (by that, hit fades and draws and make the ball do what you want), using blades won't help you. Getting your clubs professionally fitted...bingo. One or two rounds or range sessions isn't really a good barometer for making that determination.

Not that it matters, but I play cavity-back irons (Titleist AP1) while playing off a 2.5 handicap index and I can work the ball just fine with these.

As the old saying goes...it's not the club, it's the guy swinging it.
