Golf Swing Technique That Is Often Overlooked – Proper Balance

Most golfers tend to focus on the mechanics of the golf swing, i.e. the grip, the swing plane, etc., and neglect one of the most important aspects of golf swing mechanics – Proper Balance.

Proper balance in the golf swing is imperative and it's why the PGA Tour Players look like their golf swing is effortless, all while producing awesome power and accuracy. Think about it the next time you're watching golfers at your local golf course hitting shots on the range. I'll bet you the majority of them appear off-balance while swinging or practically fall over after hitting a shot.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to improve your balance is by taking your normal golf swing and noting your completed finish position or pose for some of you. Specifically, allow your body to completely relax after your swing and note, most importantly, the finish position of your feet. More than likely your feet finished with your toes pointing more towards your intended target. Now for your next shot try to copy this same foot position in your golf stance and swing as you normally would.

I know this stance / foot position may sound somewhat unorthodox. The so-called "golf gurus" advocate that the front foot may be slightly angled towards your intended target. Yet, they almost unilaterally advocate that the rear foot should remain perpendicular to the target line and not be angled forward as well. That's all well and good if you possess the balance of a Fred Couples.

This technique will take some adjustment to your ball position and weight distribution. You should notice that by turning your rear foot more towards your intended target that your weight has also shifted forward. This will assist you in avoiding another common error in the golf swing – posting of the back leg during the take away.
