Ultraviolet Light Needs Lesser Employees

The cleansing power of ultraviolet light will be used to disinfect water flowing from the local wastewater treatment plant into Dry Turkey Creek. It is only the third system in the state which is why it was financed by a loan worth $1,127 million from Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The sewer rates recently went up which is why the wastewater plant superintend promised that no increase in sewer rates would take place. A 750 gallon of water used to be 65 cents but now, it has increased to 95 cents.

This project didn't need extra funding but improvements like this needed extra income which is why rates increased. The local wastewater treatment plant currently uses a sludge purifying system to remove solids and much of the harmful bacteria. A chemicalfree process, this three step treatment results about 1.8 million gallons of water a day to be disposed into Dry Turkey Creek.

The plant supervisor advised that the Environmental Protection Agency should somehow raise its standards in wastewater treatment plants in order to somehow improve the quality of water in streams. He added that the water is infected. Before, chlorine was widely used by them not until they discovered that it's a dangerous chemical to work with. Ultraviolet light is a safer means of disinfecting water before it is put into the stream. According to him, the system involves sets of ultraviolet lamps that are similar with long fluorescent bulbs. The number of lamps to be used is 12 and 24 in normal conditions and in high wastewater flows respectively.

People get sick because of the pathogens which need to be eliminated by adding huge gallons of disinfected water into the stream thereby improving water quality. A small ultraviolet light of the county will be first used to treat the water on the city's golf and after which, will be sold to pay for a new device. The state has a loan program to help communities pay for expensive ultraviolet treatment systems according to the information officer of Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The state revolving loan fund was used in order for two of the communities to acquire ultraviolet treatment systems.

3.03 percent is the interest rate of the 20 year loan. A unique kind of ultraviolet light wavelength will be used by these systems in order for a microorganism not to reproduce DNA chains. Before this effectively kills them, they will stop reproducing.

Because the state imposed interest on that money, it began generating enough cash to finance low cost loans for city wastewater treatment projects. As what the city commissioner had said, if ever there will be large amounts of future growth, it can be handled accordingly by the new ultraviolet system. 1.6 million to 1.8 million gallons is the community's disposal of waste each day while the plant can hold up to 3 million gallons, according to him.

This new system will be a sizable unit which is able to contain the whole discharge of the plant that they are planning to buy. The city commissioner claimed that 13,000 people in the city are seeing steady growth to the north. For future growth to be contained, it is not planning on expanding its sewer infrastructure. For the near future, rate increases are not projected. He said they analyzed their rate charges a year ago and increased them in small amounts to take new growth into consideration, and that increase should carry them into the future.
