which scotty cameron?
i had a scotty laguana pro platinum mid slant, then a ping anser redwood. now im getting a new scotty cameron studio select newport putter. i like the newport 2, 2 mid slant, and the 2.5. could anybody tell the differences between the three? and i want your personal opinions on these putters. any suggestions which one is the best.
I'm with the guys above. Here's one of my previous answers dealing with the same question.
The Ping Anser is an amazing putter with a solid feel and most importantly, consistent results....I think the sweet spot is bigger.
The Newport 2 is also a great putter.... if it fits your swing path and you can consistently strike the ball accurately...if you can't you're looking at a lot of pushed and pulled putts. The alignment line on the Studio Select Newport 2 does not seem to align with the club’s sweet spot. The sweet spot is slightly towards the heel of the club, some putt with the putter level with the ground while others putt with the toe up slightly, so it seems this putter matches some swings style better than others. I’m sure that if you were a tour player that Cameron would make sure the putter would have been adjusted to your swing, but for a regular consumer to pay $300 for an off-the-shelf model that may or may not match your swing is a hard lesson in economics these days.
Honestly the Anser is a steal; a economical putter which will probably out-perform the Scotty Cameron 2 x's it's cost, once you get over the desire to have the most impressive clubs and pick something that actually may work better for you, regardless of price and prestige, I think you'll be perfectly happy with the Anser.
The difference with the mid slant is the neck providing "offset".
As I understand it the 2.5 has more "toe-hang" than the 2. Therefore, with identical strokes the 2.5 doesn't close the toe quite as quickly as the toe moves along a larger arc.
The more straight-back-straight-through your stroke is the more likely you will want a face balanced putter. If your putting stroke is more of an inside-square-inside then you will most likely want a putter with more toe-hang. Again, the Newport 2.5 would have more toe-hang than the Newport 2. Scotty Cameron doesn't make a face balanced putter as he believes that the putting stroke should follow an arc. However, his Newport Longnecks and the new Squareback are very close to face balanced.
My advice keep your Ping Anser and work on your putting stroke. It really isn't necessary to name drop or spent $300.00 on a putter, if you're truly a consistent putter with sound technique and understanding of green reading you could use a miniature golf putter from boomers and sink em'. Does that make cents?
