How do I set up a baby ball pythons tank?
I have an under-tank heater, a 10 gal. tank w/sliding lid, hollowed out half log, and a water dish. I mainly need to know where to put the heater. thnx.
I mean, where do I put the under-tank heater, under the water bowl, hiding spot ect.
This all depends on your preferences. When you have an under tank heater, it can be put on the side of the tank or on the bottom. Never put the under tank heat in the middle of the tank, it should be on one side; preferably the cool end because there is not much of a need for it on the warm/basking side. You will already have enough heat on that side, but the cool side can sometimes become too cold, which is why I keep under tank heaters there.
I usually prefer putting the under tank heater under the tank, but there are some reasons why other people put it on the side. If you have particularly thick bedding, sometimes the heat will not rise through it. During night, the under tank heater is nice on the side to raise the overall temperature of the tank. Some people do not like it on the side because it doesn't look very attractive.
You should have a cool side and warm side in the tank, if you didn't already know this. The cool side should be 75-80 degrees, with a warm side/basking area at 90-95 degrees. The overall daytime temperature should be 80-85 degrees. I like to have 2 thermometers, one for each side. This helps you to know how each side is functioning. Make sure humidity stays in the 60-70% area as ball pythons are victims to bad sheds, especially when the humdity is off.
Back to the under tank heater- again, you should plug it in and stick it on the cold side (it's useless to put a heater in the basking area). Leave for 5 minutes, then stick your hand on the bedding to see if heat is coming through. If not, you will just be better off placing it on the side of the tank.
Make sure you have UV lighting in the tank; this aids in the production of Vitamin D, as the sun would do for them in the wild. This is essential in your ball pythons tank. UVB full spectrum heat bulbs are good to use for your basking area, they really keep the heat up. Since it is only a 10 gallon tank, you can just get a 75 watt light bulb. Anything larger could overheat your snake.
These are the best tips I have to give, other than that, you really seem to have your stuff down. You're going to love having a ball python. They're amazing snakes. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions.
Best of luck! (:
-Kenzie
Edit-
As for where to put the water bowl, put it on the cold side, but do NOT place it where the under tank heater is because you can cause damage if water is spilled. It is good on the cold side because the water will not be under direct light, therefore will not heat up.
The hide is good for either side of the tank, reptiles will sometimes enjoy having it on top of the heating pad.
