Taking the Divot in FRONT of the ball?
Hi. How do I take the divot in front of the ball so I don't hit it fat? This decreases my score by so much. Is it just a good weight transfer?
Hit ball 1st then ground. Usually you take da divot with the 6 iron(sometimes a 5) to your wedges. Play ball center to 1 ball behind center in your stance. That puts your center a tad in front of the ball when you shift your weight on the down swing. Short irons should have a steeper swing than long irons and woods. Release through ball when hands have reached the lowest part of the swing.
DON'T TRY TO HELP THE BALL GET AIRBORNE.
some replyers here are mistaken by what constitutes a steeper swing and what divots are. Shorter clubs NATURALLY have a steeper swing because of narrower stance and stance closer to the ball verses a little flatter swing due to club length and wider stance. Ball position within stance changes slightly because the length of your club will "bottom out" differently due to length of club used. Ball position forward of center for longer irons so that when your club reaches the lowest point of the swing your ball contact will be slightly on the upswing -therefore, NO divot. If you position the ball one ball width behind center of stance, your club will contact the ball BEFORE it contacts the ground thereby creating the divot AFTER THE BALL (with no effort to do so). If you dont change the ball position based on your club/shot selection then you are having to change your swing to compensate. Compensations in your swing lead to eratic swings, thin shots, fat shots and you cannot play consistant golf that way. Sorry
